HANNA

After finishing her High School Transition Program, Hanna joined CEL’s Employment Opportunities Program with a clear goal in mind – to secure a position as an art studio attendant. She envisioned a role that not only allowed her to express her artistic talents but also offered a serene environment that held personal meaning for her. Collaborating closely with her assigned employment specialist, Hanna diligently worked on identifying businesses that aligned with her criteria for a fulfilling career.

The process involved refining her resume, submitting applications, and honing her interview skills through mock sessions. The employment specialist conducted job development activities on Hanna’s behalf, targeting specific employers from the identified list. Hanna interviewed at Thrown Elements Pottery in Arlington Heights. Together, they discussed the job duties where Hanna could provide valuable assistance.

The outcome was positive – Hanna was offered a part-time Studio Assistant position, turning her employment dream into reality. Throughout the onboarding process and assimilation into the workplace, Hanna received continuous support and guidance from her employment specialist. The employment specialist phased out of support and Hanna began working independently. This success story underscores the effectiveness of collaboration and tailored efforts in achieving meaningful employment goals. Hanna is an accomplished artist, having two self-published books, attending art fairs to sell her art, and commissions it.

BLITT & GAINES

Longtime CEL supporter Fred Blitt joined the CEL Board and felt compelled to make more of an impact on our members with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He challenged himself and his team to create an opportunity for someone to find a place within his team. CEL member Nick turned out to be the perfect hire.

Fred said, “Nick has a big impact on the office, and the reason that he does is because he elevates everybody else’s game. The more opportunities we can create for someone like Nick, you know the better off it is for everyone.”

Nick’s fellow employee Mara agrees, saying, “A lot of times People think that if they have a carbon copy of their best employee, it’s going to work. What actually helps is having a variety of different people, interests, ideas, and strengths come together to make something wonderful.”

TRICIA

Through CEL’s employment program, Tricia found paid, meaningful employment that allowed her to live out her dream of living independently.

In 2018, Tricia started her job at Culver’s. She recently celebrated her 6-year work anniversary in February 2024. She loves her job and provides excellent customer service to her customers. Tricia’s dedication earned her the Customer Compliment Award in January.

Tricia has shared that she is incredibly happy to be living her dream and loves receiving a paycheck every month. She said, ‘I feel good being able to pay the bills, buy groceries, and cover my mortgage.’”

BRIAN

Upon joining our Employment Opportunities Program, Brian expressed a keen interest in securing his first paid job, aiming for a meaningful experience. Despite possessing various skills and experiences, Brian hadn’t yet worked in an integrated setting. Identifying barriers in the way, Brian highlighted his goal of applying for public transit (PACE door-to-door) which will allow greater freedom.

Taking a highly personalized approach, CEL actively supported Brian throughout the PACE door-to-door application process, even accompanying him to the interview.

Brian’s journey led him to secure meaningful employment at Brookdale’s Senior Living, where he plays a supportive role in assisting residents in the dining area. This success story highlights the effectiveness of individualized support, addressing specific needs, and helping individuals like Brian achieve their employment goals. Brian joined our employment program in September 2023 and was able to achieve, paid meaningful employment within a month (October 2023)!

AMY

In CEL’s employment program, Amy developed and practiced the skills needed to obtain and maintain a job, such as creating a resume, making a good first impression, and interviewing. She began her journey by volunteering at the non-profit organization Rainbows for All Children and quickly received a paid job offer.

Amy assists the office by completing tasks for the organization’s fundraising events and maintains the office to high quality standards by restocking supplies, digitizing the company’s files, conducting inventory, performing general cleaning duties, and handling other office work as assigned.

Amy loves her job at Rainbows, and the staff there have welcomed her as a valuable part of the team. While Amy works independently at Rainbows, she continues to receive job retention services through the Employment Opportunities Program to ensure job security and longevity. Amy recently shared that she participates in bi-weekly yoga sessions with the Rainbows team—such a lovely benefit and a positive addition to the workplace environment!

Amy celebrated her one-year work anniversary at Rainbows for All Children.
