A Mother’s Courage
“The courage needed to raise a child like Katelynn is relentless.”
-Kristin Malek, CEL Board Member and Katelynn’s Mom
The birth of a child is meant to be a time of celebration. Instead, what is supposed to be a moment of joy is met with silence followed by a nurse’s whisper, “You have a baby girl and she has Down syndrome” – as if it should be a secret.
That message leaves you terrified and unprepared. What does this mean? How could this be? And you’re so scared because you don’t know how to navigate this new course.
This is what happened 14 years ago when my daughter Katelynn was born.
I wish that instead of being greeted by profound silence & whispers, I would have been told that Katelynn’s life was going to be as wonderful as it is. That we would be supported by generous people like you and places like CEL (the Center for Enriched Living). It would have saved me years of worry and angst.
The courage it takes to raise a child like Katelynn is relentless. The disability community is largely unsupported because they are not seen; they are invisible. Their vision of a full life is encumbered by barriers in a world that simply isn’t designed for them. As mom to a teenage girl with Down Syndrome, with typical teenage dreams, this is heartbreaking.
Thankfully, people like you are helping those dreams come true through your support of CEL. This wonderful community resource is a place where people with developmental disabilities are welcomed, respected, and celebrated! As Katelynn’s mother, I will never waver in my love, support, and belief in her.
That’s why I am asking you to stand alongside me to ensure that she lives the full life she is meant to have by supporting CEL today. The end of the year is a critical time for CEL and they are 79% of the way to the $758,002 end of year goal. They need our help – your help – to start the new year strong.
When you give to CEL, you give Katelynn a place where her dreams can come true. She will learn new hobbies. Make lasting friendships. Because of you, Katelynn can set her own course for what she wants out of life. She can volunteer in the community. She can even get a job of her choosing. At CEL, learning will never stop for Katelynn and her opportunities will be endless!
Plus, your gift by December 31st will be matched by the Coleman Foundation, up to $25,000!
I am comforted knowing that CEL will be here throughout Katelynn’s life. Your support ensures that she can experience all of life’s possibilities.
Thank you,
